Answers

251. Captain Donald MacIntyre, Royal Navy, had the distinction of sinking and capturing the most successful submarine Skipper of any navy in World War II, OTTO KRETSCHMER (122-+1985).

252. The ratio of men lost between the American surface ships and the submarines was huge. For every surface sailor lost in World War II, six American submariners were lost. Even though the American submarines sank more than half of all the Japanese shipping sunk while comprising less than 3% of the US Navy, they suffered a disproportionate percentage of men lost. One out of every seven American submariners was lost in World War 11, the highest loss ratio of ANY branch of the American military. However, it was worse for the German U-bootfahrer. While one out of every seven American submariners was lost-, one out of every seven German submariners came home! It was the worst loss ratio of any military force ever in history.

253. The first ship sunk in WWII was the liner ATHENIA, sunk by U-30 under Lemp. Prior to the war, this ship was featured in the film ARISE MY LOVE.

254. The ship that sank five submarines in eight days was the destroyer escort USS ENGLAND under LCDR W. B. Pendleton. They actually sank six Japanese submarines in the last twelve days of May 1944.

255. The first American submarine sank, in the Atlantic was S26, which was rammed by her own escort PC-460 en route to her patrol area in the Gulf of Panama on 24 January 1942. 46 of the 49 men did not return.
