Letters to the Editor

LOU CAFIERO (317-1993) served in the Merchant Marine and he sent us a note, which we quote here:
"For Christmas, my kin sent me a German Navy Captain's hat, so when I attended the year's first AMMV (American Merchant Marine Veterans) meeting In Jacksonville, I showed it around to my old mates. One retiree, Captain John Simms (85 years of age) wanted to try it on for size.

He put on a black leather jacket, white scarf, white belt and a set of binoculars. We then hoisted him up onto a lightpost for height and makeshift periscope housing. We loved the results!

Harry, when all Hands finished with our humor, we all sailed to the nearest pub; hoisted a few beers in salute of Captain Simms and Captain Pienning, the German Skipper (U-155) who sank SS CRANFORD out from under Captain Simms on 30 July 1942. "

EDITOR NOTE - Thanks LOU, and God Bless Captain Simms for remembering with honor, the German Skipper that sank his ship so long ago. That's what SHARKHUNTERS is all about!
