16 January - the Japanese Defense Agency publicly announced for the first time, that since the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom, Japanese fleet oilers had refueled American ships in the Indian Ocean 22 times. The 8,150 ton HAMANA (AOE 424) made 14 refueling operations. Her sister ship TOWADA (AOE 422) did so 8 times. The expenses incurred were paid by the Japanese.
