Of the 145 Knights Cross medals awarded in World War II to the men of the U-Bootwaffe, these include:
33rd was Oberleutnant zur See ERICH TOPP (118-LIFE-1985). The award was made on 20 June 1941. (photo right)
34th was Kapitänleutnant Günther Hessler, C.O. of U-107. The award was made 20 June 1941. Hessler married URSULA DÖNITZ (1339-1990), daughter of the Admiral.
35th was Kapitänleutnant Jost Metzler, Skipper of U-69….the boat of the ‘Laughing Cow’. The award was made on 29 July 1941.
