246. The first I.J.N. submarine sunk by aircraft in WW II was I-70 on 10 December 1941. She was sunk by aircraft flying off USS ENTERPRISE (CV-6)

247. The other large ship sunk by Günther Prien and U-46 was the 15,500 ton passenger ship ANDORA STAR; it was carrying some 1,500 German and Italian prisoners.

248. The two American submarines that sank Soviet ship in error were USS SAWFISH which sank KOLA and ILMEN in February 1943; and USS SANDLANCE which sank the BELLE RUSSE in May of 1943. They were misidentified as Japanese.

249. It was USS GUARDFISH that sank the American salvage ship USS EXTRACTOR (in error) on 23 January1945.

250. Hiram Cassedy was the only American submarine C.O. to be relieved from duty as Skipper of a Japanese sub. He was assigned to accept the surrender of one of the three big I-boats and he violated strict orders not to take souvenirs. It was Admiral William ‘Bull’ Halsey who removed him from command.
