Italian Submarines

12 June 1940 the Italian submarine NAIADE, under command of CC Luigi Baroni, sank the 8,029 ton Norwegian tanker ORKANGER at 31º 42’N x 28º 50’E. this tanker was first set ablaze by the Italian submarine NEREIDE then NAIADE finished her off with two more torpedoes. She reported sinking a 15,000 ton tanker.

NAIADE was a SIRENA Series 600 Class, built by C.R.D.A. in Monfalcone. She had only half a year to live after this lone success, and she was sunk in the Mediterranean by HMS HYPERION and HMS HEREWARD at 32º 03N x 25º 26’E.

I.J.N. Submarines

31 January 1942, I.J.N. submarine I-162 under command of Kplt Takaichi Kinashi attacked the 9,463 ton British motor tanker LONGWOOD with torpedoes 20 miles west of Colombo, damaging the ship.

3 February 1942 I-162 (still Kinashi) attacked the 7,402 ton British motor tanker SPONDILIUS with torpedoes and deck gun at 06º 16’N x 79º 38’E, damaging the ship.

10 March 1942, I-162 (Kinashi) attacked the 235 ton British sailing ship LAKSHIMI GOVINDA with deck gun and sank her ` at 13º 22’N x 87º 27’E.

16 March 1942, I-162 (Kinashi) sank the 865 ton Netherlands ship MERKUS by torpedo between Tjilatjap and Bombay. Kinashi reported sinking a 7,000 ton ship.

21 March 1942, I-162 (Kinashi) torpedoed the 8,012 ton British tanker SAN CIRILO at 06º 40’N x 79º 40’E, damaging the ship. Kinashi reported his target was 15,000 tons.

22 March 1942 I-162 (Kinashi) saw two hits on freighter/passenger ship, damaging the ship but it escaped with a severe list.

3 October 1942, I-162 now under command of Kapitänleutnant K. Shimose, sank the 2,332 ton Soviet steamer MIKOJAN at 19º 24’N x 85º 24’E.

7 October 1942 I-162 (Shimose) sank the 5,597 ton British steamer MANON at 15º 00’N x 80º 30’E.

7 March 1944, I-162, now under command of Kapitänleutnant Y. Doi, sank the 7,127 ton British steamer FORT McLEOD at 02º 01’N x 77º 06’E.

18 March 1944, I-162 (Doi) reported a transport south of Ceylon but there was no confirmation. I-162 survived the war and was surrendered to the Allies.
