The Royal Oak Disaster

Book Review

By Dick Cole (204-1986)

CHAPTER VI: SPECIFIC ACTIONS or OPERATIONS

Often a book will limit its scope to a specific incident, operation, technological development or time frame. Most authors will examine the subject matter from both the Allied and the Axis standpoints. The books presented in this section are either directly concerned with U-boats or involve matters that had a significant impact on U-boat operations.

by Gerald S. Snyder

The story of Prien’s entry into Scapa Flow and the sinking of the battleship HMS ROYAL OAK in described in this book. While it is written primarily from the British point of view, the German side is given ample coverage. The author conducted interviews with several U-47 crewmembers, including Wilhelm Spahr, the navigator. Full use is made of Prien’s war diary for this operation, which is reproduced in an appendix.
