by Dick Cole (204-1986)

In Chapter V of this work, we deal with novels, fictitious books.

by Ott, Wolfgang

Hardbound edition first published by Pantheon Books, New York in 1957 containing 432 pages.
Paperback edition first published by Ballantine Books, New York in 1966, containing 428 pages.

This novel, whose author served on a U-boat, follows the wartime career of several Kriegsmarine officer candidates from mine sweepers to U-boats. The characterizations are somewhat exagurated, artificial and stereotypical, and the book dwells upon the more negative aspects of navy life. Indeed, morbidity seems to be a major fixation of the book as death occurs frequently in a variety of manners.
