WWII Knights Cross Winners

By Harry Cooper

Of the 145 Knights Cross medals awarded in World War II to men of the U-Bootwaffe, these include:

26th Kapitanleutnant JURGEN OESTEN (1681-LIFE-1990), Skipper of U-61 and U-106. (photo at right) The award was made 26 March 1941.

27th Kapitanleutnant WILHELM SCHULZ (162-+-1986), C.O. of U-10, U-64 & the famed 'Edelweissboot' U-124. The award was made 4 April 1941.

28th Oberleutnant (Ing.) Robert Zurn, Engineering Officer on U-48 - the famed 'Dreimal Schwarz Kater' or Three Black Tomcats. This was the most successful submarine of any navy in World War II. The award was made 23 April, 1941.

If anyone can send us a list of all the USN submariners who were awarded the NAVY CROSS, we'd certainly appreciate it.
