Chief of the Luftwaffe General Staff General Robert Ritter von Greim had replaced Goring as head of the Luftwaffe. On 24 May 1945, Greim took his own life but it was his Chief of Staff, General Hans Jeschonnek who could not tolerate the abuse from Hitler and took his own life on 18 August 1943. 233. The incendiary bombing of Japan was by far, the worst suffered by any combatant in World War II. German buildings were stone and brick while in Japan, it was mostly wood and wood products which of course, burned fiercely. However, the US and Britain dropped nearly one and a half million incendiaries on Hamburg in July and August of 1943. 234. The only US Navy Blimp lost in World War II was the Blimp K-74, shot down by U-134 off the Florida Keys on 18 July 1943. The Blimp commander ignored the standing rules not to engage U-boats, but to report their position. He paid the price, as the 20mm guns on U-134 destroyed the Blimp. There is a famous photo of part of the deflated bag of K-74 draped over the deck of U-134. U-134 never made it back to her homeport of La Rochelle, as she was sunk in the Bay of Biscay by RAF aircraft of 179 Squadron. 235. There were 27 I.J.N. submarines in the Advance Expeditionary Force that attacked Pearl Harbor. Five of these carried midget submarines.
