by Harry Cooper

12 November 1944, the I.J.N. submarine I-38 under command of Kplt Shimose was sunk by USS NICHOLAS (DD 449) at 08 degrees 04'N x 138 degrees 03'" While in command of I-162, Shimose sank the 2,332 ton Soviet steamer MIKOJAN and damaged the 4,161 ton British steamer MARTABAN. Then, as Skipper of I-38, he conducted the only attack by that submarine in World War II when he attacked an unnamed ship in an American Task Force and claimed one ship sunk. There was no confirmation.

18 November 1944, the I.J.N. submarine I-41 under command of Kapt Leutnant Fumitake Kondo was sunk by aircraft of VC-82 flying off the carrier ANZIO (CVE 57) and USS TAYLOR (DE 415) at 12 degrees 44'N x 130 degrees 42'E. In the only attack initiated in WW II by either Kondo or I-41, they attacked an American Task Force and Kondo claimed the sinking of an ESSEX Class aircraft carrier. In reality, they hit and only damaged the light cruiser USS JUNO.

19 November 1944, the I.J.N. submarine I-37 under command of Kamimoto was sunk by USS CONKLIN (DE 439) and USS REYNOLDS (DE 440) at 08 degrees 07'N x 134 degrees 16'E. I-37 made many attacks during her time in WW II, under other Skippers. Kamimoto never launched an attack.

29 November 1944, the IJN submarine I-365 under an unknown Skipper, was sunk by USS SCABBARDFISH (SS 397) at 34 degrees 44'N x 141 degrees 01'E. I-365 had not launched any attacks during World War II.

During this same month, the Kriegsmarine lost eight U-boats'- five with all hands lost. The US Navy lost four submarines; all four went down with all hands lost. November was a very costly month for all submarine forces.
