British Built I.J.N. Boats

JOHN HOLDORF (2612-1992) has this answer to the question if any Japanese Navy submarines were British built. He writes that Vickers at Barrow-in-Furness built 5 submarines C1/C2 type for the I.J.N. Here is what he sent to us.

#LaunchedCompletedRemarks
819 May 109826 Feb 1909Ha-1 in 1924, stricken 1929
919 May 19089 Mar 1909Ha-2 in 1924, stricken 1929
104 Mar 191112 Aug 1911Ha-3 in 1924, stricken 1929
1118 Mar 191126 Aug 1911Ha-4 in 1924, stricken 1929

1318 Jun 191230 Sep 1912Ha-6 in 1924, stricken 1929

Remember, Ha refers to an I.J.N. submarine less than 500 tons. These boats were 142 feet long, 13 1/2 feet beam and 11 1/4 feet in draft. Numbers 8 and 9 were the C-1 Type and they displaced 286 tons surfaced, 321 tons submerged. These were shipped to Japan as complete submarines.

Numbers 10, 11 and 12 were the C-2 Type and displaced 291 tons surfaced, 326 tons submerged. These were shipped to Japan in sections. They were assembled and fitted out at the Kure shipyard. \umber 13 was an experimental submarine, which was a modified Vickers, built at the Kawasaki Shipyards. This boat was different in ;hat she was 125 3/4 feel long, 12 1/2 in beam and 9 3/4 feet in draft. She displaced 304 tons surfaced and 340 tons submerged. What set his boat apart from the others, aside from her shorter length, was he more powerful engine installed. She had a gasoline engine which produced 1,126hp rather than the 600hp of the other boats.

JOHN, thanks for this in depth information

Johann Buddenbaum

GUNTHER BUDDENBAUM (1229-LIFE-1992) would like to know what happened to his father's uncle Johann, who rode the Kaiser's U-boats in World War I and did not return from patrol.

Who can tell us about his uncle Johann? Thanks in advance. GUNTHER also wrote:

"Thanks for the wonderful KTB Magazine. Can't wait for the next one."

Thanks GUNTHER, we try to make each issue better than the last.
