Sharkhunters Patrol

Southern Germany and Austria

by Harry Cooper

Remember all the great historic places we will visit and the veterans we will meet. Let's have a quick recap here.

We ride the ferry to Rudesheim and take the famous cable car to the Niederwald Monument and the wine museum Bromsberg or a castle tour on the Rhine Walk.

We tour the ancient city of Heidelberg then to Sinsheim where we visit the technical museum for cars and military vehicles. Nurnberg! We are at the famous stadium where it all took place, and we are in courtroom 600 in the Palace of Justice. We tour a great military museum, housed in a former bomb shelter. We spend the evening with many veterans of the war and hear their memories. We visit the beautiful centuries old city of Rothenberg (it means Red Castle) where we had such a great time last year. They sell cuckoo clocks of all sizes and descriptions here.

Oktoberfest! No visit to Munchen would be complete without our stop at this world-famous event. Our tables are reserved at the beer hall, and the party will be great again for SHARKHUNTERS.

We also visit beautiful old cities in Austria including Spittal, Villach and Klagenfurt, the area capitol. We will have a joint dinner with many of the U-boat and Kriegsmarine veterans in the area. Ulrichsbergfest - this is the reason for our visit to Karnten. We are atop the highest mountain in the area with the ruined cathedral and giant cross in the background, while the fallen warriors of all sides are remembered in beautiful pageantry. SHARKHUNTERS is right in the middle of the ceremonies and we meet famous people such as Dr. JORG HAIDER (1616-1990), leader of his political party, and we meet many other interesting people as well. Obersalzberg! During this 'Patrol' we will not only visit this hotel where Hitler's personal guard stayed when he was on the mountain, we will stay there two nights while we tour this entire historical area. You will see where the homes of Hitler, Bormann, Goring and Speer once stood - before they were blown up by the German Government. This destruction continues today and what is there today may not be there in a year. Naturally, we visit the famed Eagle's Nest and see all the history there. We will visit inside the tunnels and bunkers with machine gun nests deep in the ground AND there are some veterans who will be with us as our special guides to take us to places on the Ulrichsberg unknown to most, and not visited by many at all. This will be a fantastic addition to our `Patrol in Southern Germany and Austria'.

Here is a translation of the speech by Dr. HAIDER on the Ulrichsberg during our `Patrol' here in 1990, eleven years ago:

    "Already in 1947 the first meeting of repatriated soldiers and their relatives took place at Zollfeld, mountainside of Ulrichsberg. And a camp service was held to thank God for a safe homecoming and to commemorate the killed fellow soldiers.

    In the following years, this memorial was built and consecrated in , 1959. Since then the call of Ulrichsberg sounds every year and became a Europe-wide dimension. Following this call, today again ' veterans and their relatives and friends came, to take stock of remembrances and considerations as well as to commemorate and to thank. We came to remember.

    We remember when we became soldiers and when we experienced the spirit of fellowship for the first time;

    We remember that fellowship also became a strong tie between people beyond boundaries of states and that it, based on esteem and respect for each other, became a strong tie between community of nations and is significant for keeping peace;

    We remember that we all love our home countries, that we confess to defend, but exclusively to defend and therefore without contradiction to our overregional, international and interhuman relations;

    We came to recollect:

    Our homecoming from war;

    That we build again our destroyed countries after war; That this work is the foundation stone of our well being and of our prosperity today;

    That our young fellow citizen took over a precious inheritance.

    We came to commemorate:

    Our soldiers killed in action;

    That they enabled us to survive, to come home, to live our life today;

    Our fellow soldiers about whom we sing `Better we can't find' .

    We came to thank:

    To thank God for guidance throughout the years since our homecoming;

    To thank God for guidance since entering a life demanding responsibility

    To ask God for strength, understanding, perception, courage, wisdom, confidence and imagination that each new day may be a further step on our way of peace.

    May mankind from all over Europe follow the `Call of Ulrichsberg' also in the future:

    In veneration of their dead;
    For a meeting of peace;
    For a harmonic Europe.

An added attraction for our `Patrol' in 2001, we are warmly invited to various special events like we enjoyed in 1990. These are all new events we did not attend in 2000 so don't miss out.

Remember - we can take only 30 people on this `Patrol' since we will have between 5 and 10 veterans on our bus with us at all times.
