Japanese and French Submarines

French Submarines

8 May 1942 around noon, the Vichy French submarine MONGE under command of Delort attacked the aircraft carrier HMS INDOMITABLE without success. This was during the actions around Madagascar, during which MONGE was also sunk. MONGE was one of the 1500 ton Class, which was featured on the envelope from KTB #144.

I.J.N. Submarines

9 January 1942 the I.J.N. submarine I-158 under command of KK S. Kitamura, sank the 7,395 ton Netherlands steamer LANGKOEAS north of Bawean Island.

9 January 1942, I-158 sank the 2,380 ton Netherlands steamer CAMPHUIJS at 04° 40'S x 111° 47'E.

22 February 1942, I-158 sank the 2,982 ton Netherlands steamer PIJNACKER HORDIJK south of Tjilatjap.

25 February 1942 1-158 sank the 7,135 ton Netherlands steamer BOERO south of the Sunda Strait.

28 February 1942, I-158 damaged the 6,735 ton British tanker BRITISH JUDGE 10 miles south of the Sunda Strait. Kitamura was the Skipper for all these attacks, the only ones made by I-158 during World War II. I-158 lived out the entire war and was surrendered to American forces, and later destroyed.
