Japanese Boats

3 October 1944 the I.J.N. submarine I-177 under command of Kplt Katsuji Watanabe, was sunk by USS SAMUEL MILES (DE 183) at 07° 48'N x 133° 28E. Watanabe also commanded I-169. While commanding I-169, Watanabe sank the 9,227 ton Netherlands motorship TJINEGARA on 25 July 1942, and while commanding I-177 he attacked and sank two destroyers but immediately thereafter, was sunk by other US Navy ships.

25 October 1944 the I.J.N. submarine I-54 under command of Kplt Denshichi Nakayama was sunk by USS RICHARD M. ROWELL (DE 403) at 09° 45'N x 126° 45'E. Neither Nakayama nor I-54 launched any attacks during the war. Previously he had commanded I-166.

?? October 1944 the I.J.N. submarine I-26 under command of Kplt. S. Nishiuchi went missing to the east of Leyte, probably the victim of a marine casualty. Although this had been a very successful submarine under other Skippers, Nishiuchi apparently made no attacks in World War II.

28 October 1944 I.J.N. submarine I-46 under command of Kplt. Kazuo Yamaguchi was sunk by USS HELM (DD 388) at 10° 56'N x 127° 13'E. I-46 made no attacks during the war, but when Yamaguchi was in command of I-176 on 16 November 1943, they sank the American submarine USS CORVINA to the south of Truk.

29 October 1944, the I.J.N. submarine I-45 under command of Kplt Mamoru Kawashima was sunk by USS WHITEHURST (DE 634) at 10° 10'N x 127° 28E. The only action initiated by either I-45 or Kawashima in World War 11 was sinking the 1,350 ton American DE USS EVERSOLE shortly before I-45 was sunk.

Italian Boats

There were no Italian submarines lost in October 1944, since Italy was out of the war by this time
