Knights Cross Medals

Of the 145 Knights Cross medals awarded in World War II to U-bootfahrer, these include:

15th: Oblt. Hans Jenisch, Skipper of U-32. The award was made 7 October 1940.

16th: Korvettenkapitan Viktor Oehrn, Skipper of U-37. The award was made 21 October 1940.

17th: Oblt. (Ing.) Gerd Suhren, L.I. (Engineering Officer) aboard U-37. This award, rarely given to anyone other than a Skipper, was made 21 October 1940.

18th: Kapitanleutnant Heinrich Bleichrodt on 24 October 1940.

19th: Wolfgang Luth, Skipper of several boats. The award was made on 24 October 1940 and Loth went on to become the second most successful submarine Skipper of World War II and he was the first of only two U-bootfahrer to earn the Oak Leaf, Crossed Swords and Diamonds to his Knights Cross. He failed to reply to the password and was accidentally shot dead by an 18-year-old German sentry about a week AFTER Germany surrendered.
