THOR - also known as Schiff (ship) 10. She was the former SS SANTA CRUZ of 3,862 gross tons and she could reach 17 knots under her A.E.G. single-shaft geared turbines producing 6,500 hp. She was just over 400 feet long, 54 3/4 in beam and 23 3/4 in draft. Her fuel capacity allowed her to make 40,000 miles at 10 knots.

She mounted six 5.9 inch guns that were taken from the old battleship SCHLESIEN one 60mm gun, two 37mm AA guns and twin 20mm guns She also carried 300 mines. In additional to all her guns, torpedoes etc. she carried one Arado 196 scout plane and approximately 350. crew members but this number varied, depending on the number of crew members she put onto captured ships as prize crews.

During her first Feindfahrt (war patrol) she sank or captured 12 ships totaling 96,602 gross tons and she was gone from 6 June 1940 until 30 April 1941, a total of 329 days and she returned safely to Europe. On her second Feindfahrt, she sank or captured 10 ships totaling 56,037 gross tons and se was gone from 20 November 1941 until 10 October 1942, a total of 324 days. She was lost in Yokohama when a tanker tied up alongside her exploded in what has been described as an accident.
