Dutch Ship Arundo

Treasure Aboard?

By Bill Rath

Thanks to BILL RATH (6033-2000) for a news article from the Asbury Park Press of 8 January 2001. This covers the wreck of the Dutch ship ARUNDO off the mouth of the Shark River.

This is a nice article about the ship itself and the Skipper, although the writer (Larry Waddel) made the error of stating that this ship was a `victim of Operation PAUKENSCHLAG' when she was actually sunk in late April of 1942. He also neglected to mention that it was sunk by U-136 (Zimmermann). U-136 herself was sunk just a few months later, on 11 July 1942 off the Canary Islands. All hands were lost.

Naturally, there had to be the remarks about 'treasure' aboard the ship in the form of copper ingots, but in a 1956 interview, the Skipper of ARUNDO flatly stated there was no such cargo. He did not however, state what the cargo of ARUND0 really was.

Thanks BILL, this goes in the file with U-136.
