IWO, IIWO, Kalipatrone, and more

Helping Members to better understand some of the naval terms (both German and English) used in World War II and in our KTB.

IWO This stood for Erster Wachoffizier, which was the First Watch Keeping Officer. In other navies, he was the XO or the Executive Officer.

IIWO This stood for Zweiter Wachoffizier or the Second Watch Keeping Officer.

Kaiserlichemarine The German Navy from 1871 to 1919.

Kalipatrone Potash cartridges which absorbed carbon dioxide.

K-Gun The device used on Allied destroyers and other escort ships which threw depth charges off the stern.

Kapitänleutnant Basically the same as Lt. Cdr in other navies.

Kaleu Pronounced Ka-Loy, it was short for Kapitänleutnant

Kilometer A unit of measure equal to 1,000 meters or about .621 statute miles.
