Japanese Boats 4 July 1944 I.J.N. submarine I-10 under command of KL Sakae Nakajima was sunk by USS RIDDLE (DE 185) and USS TAYLOR (DD 551) at 15º 26’N x 147º 48’E. I-10 was a very active submarine in World War II and one of her war patrols is covered with our Tape H-26 GOCHIN! It is an excellent tape, filled with action but also telling what it was like on a Japanese submarine in combat. 14 July 1944 I.J.N. submarine I-6 under the command of KL Nozo Fumon was possibly sunk by USS MILLER (DE 259) at 15º 18’N x 144º 26E but this is not certain. This position was the last reported position of I-6 on 30 June. I-6 made several attacks during World War II, but only one under command of Nozo. ?? July 1944 I.J.N submarine Ro-48 under the command of Ichitomi was sunk by unknown causes, possibly by USS MILLER (DE 259) north of Saipan. Neither Ichitomi nor Ro-48 attacked any shipping in World War II. 17 July 1944 I.J.N. submarine I-166 under command of Nichiuchi was sunk at 05º 10’N x 100º 00’E by the Royal Navy submarine HMS TELEMACHUS. Nichiuchi initiated no attacks during World War II but I-166 did attack shipping under other commanders. 19 July 1944 the I.J.N submarine I-5 under command of KL Y. Doi was sunk at 13º 01’N x 151º 58’E by the US Navy destroyer escort USS WYMAN (DE 38). I-5 attacked one or two ships in World War II under another commander. 26 July 1944 the I.J.N. submarine I-29 under the command of KL Takaichi Kinashi was sunk at 20º 10’N x 121º 50’E by the US Navy submarine USS SAWFISH (SS 276). 28 July 1944 I.J.N. submarine I-55 under command of Izuzu was sunk at 14º 26’N x 152º 16’E by USS WYMAN (DE 38) and USS REYNOLDS (DE 42). Neither Izuzu nor I-55 initiated any attacks during World War II. Italian Boats During the month of July 1944, no Italian submarines were lost. German Boats In the same month, 24 German U-boats were lost. By this time, the war at sea and the Battle of the Atlantic was already decided.
