The Admiral's Wolf Pack

Book Review

By Guy Goodboe (5549-1998)

Noli, Jean
Published by Doubleday & Co., 1974 containing 393 pages.

"My Fuhrer, the deeds of the men of the U-47 demonstrate the value of the submarine service. You've said that you admire their courage, which has indeed been exemplary. But their courage would have been to no avail if they had not each been able to win a difficult and individual victory beforehand; a victory over fear and death." (Admiral Donitz as quoted in The Admiral's Wolfpack).

This book by Jean Noli is a good overview of the U-boat war. While not as detailed as more recent historical publications, the book is fill of personal stories or courage and humor The description of the confrontation between the crew of U-99 and the Canadian POW Commander in Bowmanville camp relates the sense of honor & duty required of opponents in a difficult situation. The book would be a good starting point for one interested in learning about the German U-boat campaign. This book is out of print and may require a book search. A top-notch used copy runs about $35.

NOTE - GUY GOODBOE is a strong, supportive Member of SHARKHUNTERS and also a pilot for American Airlines.
