Did You Know...

Fresh food supplies lasted only two weeks on U-Boats? Every thing else had to come out of cans or containers. Fresh water was taken along from the base. Limited distilled water was only produced for the batteries.

There was no refrigerator or even a water cooler on board?

U-Boats did not have air conditioners or even heaters on board? Temperatures inside the boat reached 140 degrees in the tropics, whereas in the Atlantic or in the Arctic the temperatures were equal to the temperature of the sea.

176. Operation AVALANCHE had Salerno as its target.

177.USS NIBLACK was the first American warship to launch an attack against a German ship. On 10 April 1941 the NIBLACK had complete rescue operations of a Dutch ship and dropped depth charges on what it thought was a German U-boat. Some months later, it was NIBLACK that rescued what was left of the crew of USS REUBEN JAMES after she was sunk on the night of 31 October 1941 by U-552 under ERICH TOPP (118-LIFE- 1985); it was actually SIEGFRIED KOITSCHKA (225- 1986) who was the officer who fired the torpedoes. CARL JEPPESON (4547-1995) is quite happy that U-552 did not fire on NIBLACK while that ships was picking up the guys from the old 'RUBE' because his father was aboard NIBLACK and if she had gone down, CARL would never have been bom.
