I-74 was launched in 1937 and completed in 1938, she was renumbered to I-174 in 1942;

I-75 was launched in 1936 and completed in 1938, she was renumbered to I-175 in 1942.

These two units were slightly improved Type 6a boats with stronger gun armament and a greater depth of dive. Fuel capacity was increased by about 30 percent, making it possible for this type to travel 15,000 miles @ 10 knots. The position of the fuel tank was lowered to contribute to greater stability. I-175 sank the aircraft carrier USS LISCOMB BAY in 1943.
