Axis Submarine Losses

June 1943

by Harry Cooper

Japanese Boats

11 June 1943 the I.J.N. submarine I-9 under command of Fujii was sunk by USS FRAZIER (DD 607) at 52.49N x 177.38E.

11 June 1943 the I.J.N. sub. I-24 under command of Hanabusa was sunk by PC-587 at 53.16N x 174.24E.

22 June the I J.N submarine I-7 under command of Nagai was sunk by USS MONAGHAN (DD 354) at 51.55N x 177.36E

Italian Boats

5 June 1943 the Italian submarine H-8 was damaged so badly by RAF aircraft that she was scraped at La Spezia. June 1943 the Italian submarine BARBARIGO was lost in the Bay of Biscay. Her last report came on 20 June when she had been headed for the Far East after having been turned into a transport submarine. This was her first mission as a transport. It is assumed by some sources that she fell victim to aircraft.

German Boats

The scourge of 'Black May' continued into June of 1943, even though Admiral Karl Donitz had cut back U-Boat operations to some degree in June of 1943.

In June 1943 the submarine losses were:

    Germany 17 submarines
    Japan 3 submarines
    Italy 2 submarines

A total of 22 submarines, most with the loss of all hands aboard, something in excess of 1,200 men! Compare that with American submarine losses for the same month one submarine.

USS R-12 (SS 89) was lost on 12 June 1943 and although all but one or two were officers and men lost, R-12 was an accident and not even a combat loss. The pendulum had made a mighty swing against the Axis submarines and in favor of the American boats.
