F-21, Facher, Fangschuss,
and Fat, Fathom

We hope to help Members better understand some of the terms and words (English and German) used in WW II and in our KTB.

F-21 U.S. Navy Atlantic Section, Intelligence Center which was first known as OP-20-G at Main Navy, an exact duplicate of the OIC Submarine Tracking Room of the British Admiralty. It began operations in the spring of 1942.

FACHER Also known as Facherschuss - The simultaneous firing of two or more torpedoes; a spread.

FANGSCHUSS A coup de grace, or a finishing shot for a wounded and/or disabled ship.

FAT Federapparat Torpedo (also known as Flackenabsuch torpedo); it was a special anti-convoy torpedo. It would travel in a straight line for a pre-set distance, then would make loops and other patterns until it hit a ship or ran out of propulsion. This is an important term to remember.

FATHOM Depth measure - six feet (1.829 meters).
