Translation of 'VERDAMPTER VEE' (the damned sea) published in 1971. Written after wartime records were made available to German historians, this book contains more detailed information than earlier general histories. The early part of the war is given close scrutiny including an excellent, lengthy section on the torpedo failure problem. While the book deals with the entire naval war, the coverage of U-Boats is adequate.
