U-Boat Refueling

U-96 and U-594

by Chuck Myles (1068-1989)

CHUCK MYLES (1068-1989) spent a lot of time and research effort to compile a list of all the U-Boats that took on fuel from any other sea-going unit during World War II. Here we continue a column that has been absent from our pages since KTB # 126 some time ago. We had just gotten jammed on space. Here we continue:

U-96 initially under famed HEINRICH LEHMANN-WILLENBROCK (120+-1985), but now under Hellriegel, departed her French base at St. Nazaire (7th U-Boot Flottille) on 24 August 1942. She joined Group Stier in the North Atlantic and arrived on station on or about 30 August. She then attacked attacked Convoy ON. 127 where she sank the 4,241 ton Belgian steamer ELISABETH van BELGIE, damaged the 12,190 ton British tanker F.J. WOLFE and sank the 6,313 ton Norwegian tanker SVEVE. She then took on fuel from the Type XIV tanker (milk cow) U-461 on or about 16 September. After taking on fuel, she detached from Group Stier and joined Group Vorwarts. While en route to join Group Vorivarts U-96 sank the 415 ton Portuguese trawler BELAES. On joining Group Vorwarts, U-96 quickly attacked Convoy RB.1 where she sank the 4,989 ton British steamer NEW YORK. She departed station on or about 29 September and arrived her homeport on 5 October 1942.

U-594 under Kplt. Mumm, departed her French base (7th U-Boot Flottille) on 4 August 1942 and joined Group Stier, arriving on station about 30 August. She attacked Convoy ON. 12 7 where she sank the 6,074 ton Panamanian steamer STONE STREET, a straggler from the convoy. She took on fuel from the U-Tanker (milk cow) U-461 about 16 September for the homeward journey and arrived St. Nazaire on 28 September, 1942.
