On Eternal Patrol

Obitutuaries

by Harry Cooper

Famed treasure hunter MEL FISHER (171-1986) has succumbed to cancer, and has begun his Eternal Patrol. During the search for the treasure of the ATOCHA, his son and daughter- in-law were killed in an odd drowning accident. I'm sure MEL and his son are together now. Fair winds an following seas to you MEL.

JOHANN-OTTO (Hanno) KRIEG (199-+- 1986) was Watch Officer on U-81 under FRITZ GUGGENBERGER (269-+-1987) and later Commander of that boat. After the boat was destroyed sitting at her dock in Pola by US bombers on 9 January 1944, KRIEG was an important part of the K-Man Group; the one-man torpedoes, one and two-man U-Boats; Lintel speedboats etc. He began his Eternal Patrol 2 Jan, 1999. We wish you fair winds and following seas.

CLAY BLAIR (500-1988) visited us in 1988 when we lived in a tiny apartment in Tampa. He and his wife Joan spent the better part of a day with us, and CLAY told us all about the book he was writing (which was recently released). He filled out his new Membership application right on our sofa and I looked at the list and told him that he would be Member #493. He said no, that he wanted a number he could remember, so for the first (and only) time, we selected a number out of sequence and he became 500-1988.

BLAIR was an editor for the famed Saturday Evening Post, eventually Editor-In-Chief of all Curtis publications and he was known for his well-researched and thorough books. During the war he served aboard USS GUARDFISH (SS-217). He departed the POST when he and other editors staged what has come to be known as the 'Editors' Rebellion' against Curtis mismanagement, and CLAY became a free- lance writer.

He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on 30 December, 1998. Sail on in peace with a fair wind at your back.
