This was a further development of the Deschimag Project, which was to design a coastal submarine with closed-cycle diesel engines. The supply of compressed air would greatly increase their radius of action. The compressed air tanks took so much space they had too little room for other necessities in the boat to the point that there was no space for additional torpedo reloads.
