U-Boat Refueling

U-135, U-511, U-66, U-109

U-135 departed her base at St. Nazaire (the 7th U-Bootflottille) on 8 August 1942 and arrived on station in the North Atlantic approximately 15 August where she engaged an unidentified convoy. She took on fuel from U-462 approximately 30 August then joined Group LOHS where she engaged Convoy SC.100. She left station approximately 21 September and returned to base, arriving her homeport on 3 October.

U-511 departed her base at Lorient (the 10th U-Bootflottille) on 16 July 1942 and arrived on station in the eastern Caribbean approximately 15 August where she attacked Convoy TAW.15, then patrolled through the Antilles where she took on fuel from U-460 approximately 9 September for her homeward voyage. She arrived her homeport on 29 September. HARRY’s NOTE - This was the boat that fired the first rockets from underwater and she was eventually given over to the I.J.N. on 16 September 1943. HEINZ REHSE (254-1987) was an engineering Petty Officer on this boat from the beginning and all the way to the Japanese submarine base in the Far East.

U-66 departed her French base at Lorient (the 2nd U-Bootflottille) on 26 June 1942 and arrived on station in the Caribbean about 9 July. She patrolled the Eastern Caribbean and the Greater Antilles, mined the harbor at Castries, patrolled off Trinidad then to the eastward and southeastward. She took on fuel from U-462 approximately 9 September for her homeward journey, departed station 10 September and arriving her homeport on 29 September.

HARRY’s NOTE - VINZ NOSCH (280-1987) rode this boat.

U-109 departed her base at Lorient (the 2nd U-Bootflottille) on 18 July 1992 and arrived on station off Freetown, Sierra Leone West Africa approximately 2 August. She patrolled off Freetown, the Ivory Coast and the Gold Coast then took on fuel from U-460 approximately 16 September for her return voyage. she arrived her homeport 6 October.

HARRY’s NOTE - This was also a PAUKENSCHLAG boat that patrolled the American east coast in January/February 1942. WOLFGANG HIRSCHFELD (34-1984) was a radioman aboard.
