Skippers of U-149 include Horst Höltring from November 1940 to November 1941 and he also commanded U-604 - U-604 was sunk and Höltring committed suicide on another boat after breathing chlorine gas when that boat was sinking; Rolf Borchers from November 1941 to July 1942 he also commanded U-226, U-276 and U-2515; Frhr von Hammerstein-Equord; Plohr was the last commander until the boat was surrendered.

U-149 was initially assigned to the 1st U-Bootflottille as a Frontboot (combat boat) then in June or July 1941, she was transferred to the 22nd as a Schulboot (school boat). The boat was surrendered 3 June 1945 in Wilhelmshaven, transferred to Northern Ireland and eventually scuttled in Operation DEADLIGHT.
