These Russian submarines were lost. September 1983, CHARLIE Class submarine lost to unknown causes while patrolling in the northern Pacific. The wreck was later raised. About 90 men lost; there were no survivors. 6 October 1986, YANKEE Class submarine surfaced after an explosion in the missile room killed three men. The sub was taken in tow by the Russian merchant ship KRASNOGVARDEYSK. The submarine was then either scuttled deliberately or foundered - either way, he* sank in 18,000 feet of water to the north of Bermuda. Three men lost; 117 survivors. 7 April 1989, the submarine KOMSOMOLETS surfaced with a fire in the reactor room. Those of the crew who were able to abandon ship did so, and the submarine sank in about one mile deep water in the Barents Sea. 42 men lost, 27 survivors. HARRY’S NOTES - there was an in-depth report on the sinking of KOMSOMOLETS in our KTB Magazine shortly after the loss. KOMSOMOLETS means ‘Young Communist’; * - Yes, ‘HE’ for a Russian ship or submarine. This was explained in our KTB Magazine a month or two ago.
