JERRY MULLEN (4987-1996) would like information on what he thinks was a U-Boat attack on the French merchant ship DESIRADE off Ireland on or about 5 February 1945. The ship was in convoy, inbound to Liverpool carrying RAF families as well as some Royalty. Princess Alix and Prince Charles of Luxembourg and also Prince Andre de Bourbon were on board. JERRY says they were in the middle of the convoy and on the afternoon of 5 February, a periscope was sighted 200 feet off their port beam and they started dropping depth charges at once. They also opened fire with 20mm. Much later, after dark, they were hit. He says that the ship stopped dead in the water and preparations were made to lower lifeboats. He states that there was great confusion but later they decided there was no danger to life. They made it to Liverpool. He was only nine at the time, and his mother told him that the attack was probably because of the Luxembourg Royalty on board. We are a bit confused here because our files show no attack of any kind at any time by any Axis submarine on this ship. It is therefore a good possibility that DESIRADE struck a mine. Does any Member have information on the loss of the French ship DESIRADE? Please let us know. RAF 311 (Czech) Squadron Col.
