17 May 1942 the I.J.N. submarine I-28 under Yajima was sunk by USS TAUTOG (SS 199) at 06.30N x 152.00E. This was on the second war patrol of USS TAUTOG, while under command of J. H. Willingham.

17 May 1942 the I.J.N. submarine I-64 under Niina was sunk by USS TRITON (SS 201) at 29.25N x 134.09E. This was on the third war patrol of USS TRITON, while under command of C. C. Kilpatrick.

There were no Italian submarines sunk in May 1942, marking the second straight month in which there were no Italian sub losses.
