ITALIAN BOATS On 21 August 1940 the Italian submarine DANDOLO under CC Ricardo Boris torpedoed and damaged the 3,768 ton Netherlands motor tanker HERMES at 38.57N x 13.50W. On 26 August 1940 DANDOLO torpedoed and sank the 5,187 ton Brit. steamer ILVINGTON COURT at 37.14N x 21.52W On 31 January 1941 DANDOLO torpedoed and sank the 1,367 ton British steamer PIZARRO at 49.03N x 19.40W These were the only actions by CC Boris in the war. On 4 November 1941 DANDOLO under WALTER AUCONI (1011-1989) torpedoed and damaged the 4,220 ton French tanker TARN On 8 Nov. DANDOLO sank the 6,600 ton Spanish steamer CASTILLO OROPESA NOTE - these ships were not recognized as neutral in time. These were the only attacks by AUCONI during the War. On 1 January 1943 DANDOLO under TV Giacomo Scano attacked a ship & heard two detonations after run time of nearly two minutes. No confirmation. This was the only attack in WW II by Scano. On 16 June 1943 DANDOLO under Aldo Turcio attacked what he thought was a battleship. It was actually the 5,450 ton RN light cruiser HMS CLEOPATRA. It took damage but the two torpedoes did not sink her. DANDOLO logged 39,327 miles on patrol, a record for the Italian boats. This was the only boat of the MARCELLO Class to survive the war. She was broken up in 1947 JAPANESE BOATS On 31 May 1942 Japanese I-24 under KK Hiroshi Hanabusa launched midget subs into the harbor at Sydney. They attacked the cruiser USS CHICAGO but reported as the battleship HMS WARSPITE. The torpedoes missed the ship and detonated against the quay and destroyed an old accommodation hulk. On 3 June 1942 I-24 attacked an Australian steamer with gunfire but the ship escaped without damage. On 3 June I-24 torpedoed & sank the 4,812 ton Australian steamer IRON CHIEFTAN These were the only actions for I-24 and for Hanabusa in World War II as both the boat and the Skipper were lost a year later, on 11 June 1943. She was sunk by USS PC-487 at 51.55N x 177.36E.
