Skippers of U-146 include: Eberhard Hoffmann who also commanded U-451 where he was killed in action; Otto Ites (KNIGHTS CROSS) who also commanded U-94 which was lost near Haiti; Gemeiner who also commanded U-137 and U-154 where he was killed in action; Jürgen Nissen who also commanded U-105 where he was killed in action; Waldschmidt who also commanded U-2374 and U-4719; Hilsenitz who also commanded U-108; Wust; Hulsenbeck who also commanded U-121 and U-1209 where he was killed in action; Grimme who also commanded U-116 where he was killed in action; Schauroth was the last Skipper, and he had earlier commanded U-142.

U-146 was initially attached to the 1st U-Bootflottille as a FrontBoot (combat boat) then she went to the 22nd U-Bootflottille as a Schulboot (training boat).

U-146 had one war patrol in the North Atlantic.

Sometime between 1947 and 1953 U-146 was raised and broken up for scrap, as were almost all scuttled German U-Boats.
