Italian and Japanese Submarines

by Harry Cooper

ITALIAN BOATS

On 30 March 1941 the Italian submarine DAGABUR under TV Domenico Romano attacked the 5,450 ton British cruiser HMS BONAVENTURE with two torpedoes. After a run time of nearly three minutes, they heard two explosions and claimed damage on a 9,100 ton heavy cruiser. HMS BONAVENTURE was sunk some hours later by the Italian submarine AMBRA.

On 14 December 1941 DAGBUR, now under CC Alberto Torri, attacked the 5,220 ton British cruiser HMS GALATEA and heard two detonations after run time of nearly two minutes. The cruiser was later sunk by U-557.

These were the only attacks made by DAGBUR during the War and DAGBUR was herself sunk on 12 August 1942 by the Royal Navy destroyer HMS WOLVERINE

JAPANESE BOATS

On 21 December 1941 the Japanese I-23 under KK Genichi Shibata attacked the 6,771 ton American steam-powered tanker AGWIWORLD, damaging the ship.

On 25 December 1941 I-23, still under Shibata, attacked the 2,119 ton American freighter DOROTHY PHILIPS, damaging the ship.

These were the only attacks made by I-23 during the War. I-23, still under Shibata, was lost in late February 1942 to unknown causes south of Oahu, the Hawaiian Islands. She was most probably the victim of a diving accident or other on-board accident
