The carrier CHIYODA was built as part of the 1934 building program; she was launched in 1937 and commissioned in 1942.

    Displacement 9,000 tons
    Length 178 meters
    Beam 18.8 meters
    Guns four 127mm dual purpose guns
    Planes forty aircraft
    Full power 15,000 hp

DAMAGE TO SHIP and AFTEREFFECTS

During the action in the Philippine Sea, CHIYODA was the target of attack by American bombers and suffered one direct bomb hit in the after section of the flight deck. The explosion caused light damage and the ensuing fire was quickly extinguished. The fighting abilities of the ship were hardly affected.

CONCLUSION

The direct hit of one bomb on the Japanese hydro aircraft carrier CHIYODA had almost no adverse effect on her fighting abilities.
