8th U-BootFlotille

Flotilla Commanders

by Harry Cooper

The 8th U-BootFlottille was a training flotilla, originally based at Königsberg, the capitol of East Prussia which is now known as Kaliningrad and is the headquarters of the Russian Baltic Sea Fleet. The 8th Flotilla moved in February of 1942 to Danzig, now known as Gdansk, Poland.

The Flottillen Chef (Flotilla Commander) was:

    WILHELM SCHULZ (162-+-1986) from October 1941 to January 1942;
    Hans Eckermann until January 1943;
    Bruno Mahn until March 1943;
    Werner von Schmidt until April 1944;
    Hans Pauckstadt until January 1945.

If the name of the first FlottillenChef seems familiar, it should. He was C.O. of U-124 the EDELWEISSBOOT, who trained such commanders as REINHARD HARDEGEN (102-LIFE-1985); Werner Henke; Heinz Eck and Jochen Mohr. He also trained Peter Zchesche, second Skipper of U-505 who committed suicide while under enemy attack.
