Skippers of U-144 include Friedrich von Hippel who also commanded U-76 from which he was captured and taken prisoner; Gert von Mittelstädt who was killed in action with the loss of U-144.

U-144 made only one Feindfahrt (war patrol). During this patrol U-144 sank the Russian submarine M-78 and she in turn was sunk by another Russian submarine just two weeks later. All crewmembers of U-144 were lost with her sinking, but there is no record if they died with their submarine, or if some were taken prisoner by the Soviets.
