7th U-BootFlotille

Flotilla Commanders

by Harry Cooper

The 7th U-BootFlotille was a ‘FrontFlotilla’, a combat flotilla based at St. Nazaire. Several of the top Skippers were assigned to the 7th, not the least of whom was ERICH TOPP (118-LIFE-1985). If the emblem looks familiar, that is because it is the famed ‘BULL OF SCAPA FLOW’ that was on the tower of U-47 after Günther Prien’s successful raid on the British Home Fleet anchorage at Scapa Flow where he sank the battleship HMS ROYAL OAK in October, 1939.

The FlotillenChef (Flotilla Commander) was:

    HANS-RUDOLF RÖSING (313-1987) January to May 1940;
    Herbert Sohler from May 1940 to February 1944;
    Adolf Piening from February 1944 to the end.
