Type XVII-E

Profile and History

by Harry Cooper

Because of the technical problems with the Walter drive, primarily the extremely poor fuel efficiency, this TYPE went back to the conventional power train and modified the hull to fit it all in. The battery capacity was doubled because the electric motor was almost as powerful as the Walter turbine it replaced. None of these TYPE XVII-E submarines were ever built, but it was the basis for the later TYPE XXIII coastal submarine.
