Vocabulary

Turm, Abzeichen, Zerstorer

by Harry Cooper

This section began in KTB #115 and is intended to familiarize our Members with many of the German (and other military) terms we see on the pages of our KTB Magazine.

TURM is the TOWER, as conning tower.

ABZEICHEN means EMBLEM, such one would find on the conning tower; so

TURM ABZEICHEN would be the CONNING TOWER EMBLEM, all of which were captured so beautifully in the book by GEORG HÖGEL (240-1987).

A ZERSTÖRER is something that no one on a sub wants to see, except possibly through the ‘scope. This is a DESTROYER

Another thing no submariner wants to see at all is a FLIEGER; a FLIER or more precisely, an AIRPLANE.
