Skippers of U-140 include KL Hans-Peter Hinsch from 7 August 1940 who also commanded U-4 and U-569; KL Klaus Popp who also commanded U-552; KL Hans-Jürgen Hellriegel (KNIGHTS CROSS) from 19 June 1941 who also commanded U-96 & U-543 where he was killed in action; OL Markert; OL Zeissler who also commanded U-1192 and U-1194; OL Scherfling was the last C. O.

U-140 had one patrol in the North Atlantic over November and December 1940, then was transferred into the Baltic to operate against Soviet shipping over June and July 1941. She was assigned to the 1st U-BootFlotille while operating as a FrontBoot (combat boat) then she was transferred to a training Flotille as a Schulboot.

Some time between 1947 and 1953, U-140 was raised and broken up for scrap by the Allies.
