Enigma

More From Jude

by Jude Stackpole

JUDE STACKPOLE (1334-+-1990) is on his ‘Eternal Patrol’, but we have a great deal of his work on hand and bring it to you here. He was working hard to determine if the TRITON U-Boat code was sold to the Allies by a traitor, rather than having it broken by Bletchley Park. Here he writes:

“Interestingly enough - according to Kahn in ‘THE CODE BREAKERS’ - there was nothing really new or especially remarkable about the ENIGMA Machines. The basic technology dated from the early 1920’s and was available on the commercial market from the 1920’s onward. Too, with the exception of the British who used code tablets and the Soviets who also used something unique unto themselves, almost all the other major powers used some form of the ENIGMA.

The version used by the United States Navy incorporated eight fixed rotors and printed hard copy. There is a Japanese version as well - one was on display at the Smithsonian when I last visited there, and I presume a variety of other versions as well.”
