‘Free’ Frigates?

US Frigates to
Turkey, Bahrain, and Egypt

by Charles Hoffert (4247-1995)

According to an article in the Palm Beach POST sent by BUD DANA (245-A/LIFE-1987) four US Navy frigates are being given away - for FREE! Is that what tax dollars are supposed to be used for; to give warships to foreign countries? In this case, two are to go to Turkey, one to Egypt and the fourth to Bahrain. The ships are valued at $104 million to $140 million - each. That’s something like $416 million to $560 million each. Over the last few years, the US Government has given away five guided-missile destroyers, 13 tank-landing ships and 39 Frigates - that is in excess of $7 billion dollars. The US Government says that it is less expensive to give these ships away than to destroy them.

‘Your tax dollars at work.’
