U-974 Found

Sunk 1944, Found 1996

by Andy Thurson

We received a letter from ANDY THURSON (3349-1993) in which he encloses an article from a Norwegian newspaper that says U-974 was discovered by the seismic exploration vessel S/V GEOGRAPH on 10 June this year.

U-974 was torpedoed by the Norwegian submarine ULA on 19 April, 1944 at 0700 hours. Of the crew of 49 men, only the Skipper and six or seven enlisted men survived.

The wreck is at a depth of 150 meters (something near to 500 feet), and it was photographed by a mini-submarine. The videotapes were sent to the Naval Museum in Horten for analysis. Because of the strong currents in the area, there is little sediment or accretion on the steel hull, which is broken aft of the control tower where the single torpedo hit. The wooden deck has disappeared but a machine gun, the periscope and the antenna are clearly visible.

ANDY, many thanks for this ‘heads up’ and please keep us posted.
