Worldwide Submarine Proliferation

Russia

from a Naval Intelligence Report

While several countries produce modern torpedoes for export, Russia continues to develop, produce and offer for sale the largest assortment of submarine carried weapons, including rocket-powered antisubmarine torpedoes; antisurface ship, wakehoming torpedoes; and supersonic, sea-skimming antiship cruise missiles. China and several European countries produce and have offered for export various heavyweight dual-purpose, antisubmarine and antisurface ship torpedoes, as well as torpedo tube-launched antiship cruise missiles.

Most submarine navies also possess submarine-deployable mines. Foreign stockpiles consist of vintage contact mines augmented by a growing number of more modern influence-actuated weapons. Advanced moored mines with improved target localization are fairly widely available. The more advanced propelled warhead mines, while limited to only a few countries, are nonetheless available on the export market and may become more widely distributed in the future.

This ends this report from the ONI (Office of Naval Intelligence). Members who have been on board for a few years will remember the ad we ran in January a few years, telling all the former Soviet weaponry for sale - there was even a phone number if you wanted to order your own 11 inch gun turret from a cruiser, TEST-71 wire-guided torpedoes, MIG fighters of all classes - even WHISKY Class submarines for a mere $200,000! That prompted a quick call from one Member who was with the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) asking if we knew of any drug smugglers who bought any WHISKEY Class boats to move large quantities of illegal drugs.
