Submarine San Jurjio

by Harry Cooper

This was a large, sea-going Italian-built submarine that was delivered to the Spanish Navy in April of 1937. Since Spain had no real part in World War II, this submarine had no role to play - or did she? We have uncovered reports that SAN JURJIO was taking on diesel fuel off Brazilian coast in the Spring of 1945!!!

1. What was she doing in a war zone when she was not at war? It would appear that this would be a danger of being attacked and sunk in error if spotted in that area by American anti-submarine forces.

2. What was her mission? We think we know, but we need to have something more definite.

3. Where did she go after taking fuel in Spring & Summer 1945?

4. When did she arrive back in Homeport?

5. What was her Homeport? Was it the area of Vigo (Spain) or another port on the Gallegan coast?

In 1946, SAN JURJIO patrolled extensively in the Atlantic.

6. What was she doing on these patrols?
7. Who were her crew members?
8. Who were her special passengers?
9. Where did SAN JURJIO take them?
10. Where was her sister-sub., GENERAL MOLA at this time.

What else can our Members tell us about the ‘Black’ missions of SAN JURJIO and her sister submarine, GENERAL MOLA? Believe me, these are not idle questions - they are very important.
