USS S-35 (SS 140) was EB 73C Design

She was built by United Iron Works;
Her keel was laid 14 June, 1918;
She was launched 27 February, 1919
Her Sponsor was Miss L. C. Bailey;
She was commissioned 7 May, 1923;
Her first Skipper was Lt. Henry L. Phelps;

The history of USS S-35:

7 December, 1941 she was providing services to the West Coast Sound School in San Diego at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces;

3 April, 1942 USS S-35 arrived for duty at Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands; Lt. J. E. Stevens commanding;

12 April 1942 she departed Dutch Harbor for her first war patrol, bound for the Kurile Islands;

21 December 1942 - at 1805, the Skipper Lt. Henry S. Monroe received debilitating injuries during a severe storm while patrolling in the vicinity of Amchitka Island which was the beginning of a 50 hour long ordeal that almost cost the loss of the boat and all hands;

2 July 1943, during the sixth patrol, Lt. Monroe carried out a daylight submerged periscope approach, fired three torpedoes which scored two hits, and sank the 5,430 ton cargo ship BANSHU MARU No. 7;

?? August 1943, USS S-35 under LCDR J. E. Stevens, carried out a special mission in the Kuriles;

30 November 1943, the boat completed her seventh and final war patrol, taking place from Dutch Harbor;

February 1944, USS S-35 arrived in Pearl Harbor mid-month and began providing training services in the areas of Majuro and Eniwetok;

January 1945, spent in San Diego for inspection and repair;

February 1945, returned to Oahu for use as a damage control training submarine;

19 March 1945, USS S-35 was decommissioned at Pearl Harbor but continued to be used as a school ship;

4 April 1946, USS S-35 was sunk as a torpedo target.

War Patrols

1st war patrol ran from 12 April to 30 Apr. 1942; the boat patrolled from DH Kuriles to DH; duration 18 days, no sinkings.

2nd war patrol ran from 28 May to 29 Jun. 1942; the boat patrolled from DH Kiska to DH; duration 32 days, no sinkings.

3rd war patrol began 14 July 1942 from DH Kiska to DH; no date of completion of patrol, not known how many days on patrol, no sinkings.

4th war patrol ran from 26 Oct to 22 Nov. 1942; the boat patrolled from DH Attu to DH; duration 27 days, no sinkings.

5th war patrol ran from 11 Dec. to 29 Dec. 1942; the boat patrolled from DH Kiska to DH, duration 18 days, no sinkings.

6th war patrol ran from 17 June to 21 Jul. 1943; the boat patrolled from DH Kuriles to DH; duration was 34 days during which time they sank the 5,490 ton Japanese BANSHU MARU #7 at 52.00N x 156.00E.

7th war patrol ran from 6 August 43 from DH ??? to DH, no date of completion of patrol, not known how many days on patrol, no sinkings.

8th war patrol ran from 25 Nov to 30 Dec. 1943; the boat patrolled from DH Kuriles to DH; duration was 34 days, no sinkings

USS S-35 was commanded by J. E. Stevens and H. S. Monroe.
USS S-35 was awarded one battle star in World War II.
